Wake Up Call of Dutch Labour Party about Welfare State

The welfare state has gone too far. This is the conclusion of the Dutch Labour Party PVDA reports Elsevier today (in Dutch). There should be obligations and not only rights, because “a welfare benefit must be earned”.
This was declared by Mr. Han Noten (bio in Dutch), the leader of the Labour Party’s fraction in the Dutch House of Representatives (homepage in Dutch). Mr. Noten refers to a “duty to society” and a concept of reciprocity. Currently this reciprocity is lacking in the Dutch welfare state. He thinks that about a million people are capable of doing something in return by working or going to school. Among them are the ones who drop out of school too early: “They should be grabbed by the scruff of the neck Mr. Noten added. He warns that a reform shouldn’t be implemented too fast.
