Die Abteilung für wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen der US-Luftwaffe hat ein Forschungsprojekt in Auftrag gegeben, dessen Ziel es ist, Methoden zum Durchsuchen von Blogs zu entwickeln. In der offiziellen Pressemitteilung heißt es, man verspreche sich von der Studie “unschätzbare Hilfe im Kampf gegen den Terrorismus”. Probleme bereitet den beauftragten Wissenschaftlern derzeit allerdings das ungeheure Datenvolumen. Deshalb, so Chef-Wissenschaftler Brian E. Ulicny, arbeite man an automatisierten Methoden, die den Analysten sagen sollen, an welchen Themen Blogger zu einem gegebenen Zeitpunkt besonders interessiert sind. Sein Kollege Dr. Mieczyslaw M. Kokar sieht zudem dringenden Nachholbedarf bei den Militärs, die nach seiner Meinung das Web als Informationsquelle unterschätzen. Für ihn ist das Web ein Kriegsschauplatz. Und für den gelte es nun einen “Informationsradar” zu entwickeln.
“A good example is the recent furor in the Muslim world over the publication of cartoons of Mohammad in a Danish newspaper. The original publication wasn’t much noticed in the West, but bloggers discussed this event that possibly contributed to riots worldwide.
“The fact that the web is a vast source of information is sometimes overlooked by military analysts,” Kokar said. “Our research goal is to provide the warfighter with a kind of information radar to better understand the information battlespace.””
