Turkey and the European Union

For one of the latest polls, see Elsevier (in Dutch), referring to a poll organised by the American German Marshall Fund. In total 40 % of Europeans are against EU membership of Turkey. Turkish EU membership is only supported by 11 % of the French, who recently voted “non” in the referendum about the so-called European constitution.Everyone agrees by now that the planned EU enlargement also played a role in the negative outcome of the referenda in France and the Netherlands. For a critical American comment on the French referendum and French politics about this issue, see the article of John Zvesper. On the other hand some key European leaders don’t seem to bother about it and apparently “implement the constitution” as if nothing happened. Moreover, the UK steps up the pressure over Turkey accession talks. Jack Straw, the UK foreign secretary said, “he believes Ankaras entry into the union would be a blow to those who say there is a clash of civilisations between the Muslim world and the West. A refusal to let Turkey in, on the other hand, would fuel Islamic extremism.”Does anyone really believe …
