The New York Times editorial board criticized NYU Law School professor Burt Neuborne for the legal bill he’s charged Holocaust survivors for helping them win a $1.25 billion settlement from Swiss banks accused of helping the Nazis steal Jewish property. The total bill was more than $4 million.

“The dollar amounts are troubling, and so are the slipshod hourly records that Mr. Neuborne submitted.”A group of angry Holocaust survivors are challenging his bill. Neuborne, who initially worked pro bono in winning the settlement, is charging for his current work of divvying up the proceeds at a big-firm rate of $700 per hour. “Holocaust victims are not Exxon Mobil,” says the Times, calling the rate “unseemly.” The Times also admonishes him for sloppy billing records — in one instance, he billed 30.5 hours for one day of work, and 25 on another, …
