Eine neue Kaste in der Großkanzlei-Hierarchie

Die Contract Attorneys entwickeln sich immer mehr zu einer eigenen institutionalisierten Hierarchieebene neben (Senior-, Equity-, Local-, Fixed Salary-)Partnern, Associates und Paralegals. Bei Skadden zB heißen sie offenbar Staff Attorneys, bekommen 80.000 Dollar und machen document review.

Beim WSJ konnte man schon im letzten Herbst lesen:Overworked associates have always been able to take comfort in the fact that there exists lower forms of life in BigLaw’s hierarchy — contract attorneys and paralegals. Now, at least at McDermott Will & Emery, a new class of lawyers will be created that should help self-loathing associates feel better about themselves.

The Recorder reports this morning that McDermott plans to create a new tier of full-time non-partnership-track attorneys to handle lower-end tasks at lower billing rates. “In a market where high compensation for lateral partners, lateral associates and associates are creating pressures, we’re trying to bring the best quality service at the lowest price to our clients,” said Robert Mallory to the paper. “We live in a very competitive world.”
